C-reactive Protein: A Prognostic Indicator

چکیده
© 2017 International Journal of Applied and Basic Medical Research | Published by Wolters Kluwer ‐ Medknow C‐reactive protein (CRP) is a serum acute phase reactant and a valuable inflammatory biomarker in various clinical conditions. It was first discovered by Tillett and Francis (1930) in the serum of patients with pneumonia but was isolated in 1941.[1] CRP derives its name due to ability of the CRP to react with C‐polysaccharide isolated from pneumococcal cell walls. The CRP gene is located on the first chromosome. It is an inducible protein which is secreted mainly by hepatocytes in response to inflammatory stimulus. It functions by binding to pathogens and activating the complement system of the body.[2] It is also produced in small amount by nonhepatic cells such as neurons, atherosclerotic plaques, monocytes, kupffer cells, and lymphocytes.[3,4]

Evaluation of preoperative elevation of serum c-reactive protein as an indicator for prognosis of colorectal cancer
Abstract Background : Cancer has not been elucidated in colerectal site. C-reactive protein (CRP) is a product synthesized in hepatocytes and has been reported to be up-regulated by such proinflammatory cytokines as interleukin-1 (IL-1), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor (TNF). The significance of a preoperative serum elevation was evaluated using CRP as a predictive i...
متن کاملCan we consider erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein as a severity index in pemphigus vulgaris?
Background: Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) are 2 inflammatory indicators that increase in many pathologic and physiologic conditions. Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is an autoimmune skin disease in which autoantibodies against desmogleins cause acantholysis. In this study we have measured ESR and CRP levels in patients with PV to evaluate the relationship between an ...
متن کاملPrognostic value of C-Reactive Protein in Acute Coronary Syndromes
Introduction: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is among the most common, serious, chronic and life- threatening illnesses in the world. CAD represents a spectrum of conditions, with acute myocardial infarction at one end of it and silent ischemia at the other. There is growing evidence on importance of prognosis of C- reactive protein (CPR) in unstable angina and this protein is a maker of an adve...
متن کاملبررسی تفاوت تستهای آلبومین و C-Reactive Proteinو پلاکت در بیماران مراجعه کننده به بخش آندوسکوپی بیمارستان ولیعصر (عج) زنجان با مشکلات گوارشی
Background and Objective: Upper gastro intestinal cancers are considered to be a global health problem and gastric cancer is the fourth common malignancy worldwide. In cancer patients, low levels of albumin, C-reactive protein and platelets are considered as bad prognostic factors. The objective of this study was to evaluate the levels of Albumin (Alb), C-reactive protein (CRP), and Platelets ...
متن کاملPrognostic Value of C - reactive Protein and Procalcitonin Levels in Predicting Anastomotic Leakage after Colorectal Resection in Mazandaran Province
Background and purpose: Colorectal resection is used for various diseases and leakage in an anastomosis is one of its complications. Some studies confirmed the predictive effects of C-reactive protein (CRP) and procalcitonin markers leakage in anastomosis. This study aimed to investigate the prognostic value of CRP and procalcitonin in predicting anastomotic leakage in elective colorectal surge...
متن کاملThe importance of C-reactive protein and other inflammatory markers in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a condition associated with inflammation in lungs and airways. The impacts of inflammatory process is not limited to respiratory system but extend to extrapulmonary organs with resultant complications involving endocrine, metabolic and cardiovascular systems. The extent and severity of inflammation may be partly estimated by serum measurement of s...
